Wow this is amazing I look forward to more! Also I am fascinated about the thing about Phyllis ending the friendship & shelving the book at her husband's insistence! Like was he threatened? It's very interesting!!!!!

IKR? Very much like Nushu (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N%C3%BCshu) in that this type of thinking and communication between women at that time was revolutionary and men (in this case, Phyllis's husband) felt threatened by it. My own dad never told Magi what to do. He was her greatest fan.

These were the experiences of nearly every housewife I knew in the 1950s when I was a child. It's almost unsettling because I understand that they felt this way, and later in life, my mother confided in me about how she believed she could never fully be herself.
